Examine the whole encounter
Colav Lab focuses on analysing encounter scenarios involving multiple vessels and environmental conditions. It brings observations, motion tracks and vessel response into a shared frame for examining the reasoning behind navigation decisions.
From observation to comparing options
Course and speed options are examined alongside other vessels’ movements and our vessel’s possible response. A meaningful comparison starts the options from the same observation and evaluates them at the same future instant. The reasoning behind a manoeuvre is read together with the assumptions under which it was selected.
When a new observation departs from the earlier movement assumption, the selected manoeuvre is reassessed. This keeps the link between observation, assumption, command and vessel response traceable as the encounter develops.
Different questions within one encounter
The illustrative open-sea sequence follows one five-vessel encounter. The first options share a common observation; when T04’s turn changes the earlier assumption, the request is revised. A possible contact on a rejected branch is then examined separately. That branch is not an event on the chosen path.
Reading observations, options and outcomes together provides a shared frame for discussing what changed, which information informed a decision and when reassessment is needed.
